SSDT hooking is a classic technique that became significantly harder after the introduction of PatchGuard (Kernel Patch Protection, KPP) in 64-bit Windows. PatchGuard monitors the SSDT (among many other structures) and triggers a CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION bug check (0x109) if it detects modification.
